Asia Tour Pt. 1: Myanmar/Burma
- Here's a shot of Rangoon, Myanmar (also known as Burma). It's HOT - 98 degrees. And MUGGY. The city is lush and green.

- This is looking out the hotel window on the lake. I hate to think of how much of this was destroyed by the Cyclone in May - just 4 weeks after we were there.

- This is my FAVORITE photo of the tour. These are actually little girls from the temple. I have no idea why the little one has a Spiderman mask. The people here are really oppressed, but they don't show it at all. They give us HUGE smiles everywhere!

- Monks are everywhere in Myanmar. The Buddhist culture is hugely popular.

- I went for a walk around town on our first day. This is a floating building on the lake.

- I know that bamboo is a strong wood. But using it for scaffolding??? That's old school.

- Maya took this shot of me waiting in the hotel lobby on our first night.

- The next day we went to the American Center for our first clinic. Before we started we sat in on a salsa dancing class (who knew?)

- This is a shot of our clinic. They expected 20-30 college students. They ended up having over 100.

- Maya leading the students in a singing lesson.

- Afterwards we were bombarded by students looking for photos and autographs.

- We had our first show that night. The stage was outdoors and it was beautiful. This is one of the opening acts, a local hip-hop MC.

- This is a picture from the side of the stage.

- Maya and Bruce signing autographs afterwards.

- These are two security guards. They told us how much they loved the show and that they were dancing at their posts. Big smiles!

- Here are some of our friends talking with Gordon from the US Embassy. Everyone we met from the embassies and consulates were FASCINATING people.

- This is walking up to a little temple by our hotel.

- Here's a side view of the temple. You can see all of the ornaments.

- And here's the front view. The details are unbelievable.

- I told a friend that I was going to Burma and he replied "I've been there. Everything's backwards in Burma. The men wear skirts and the women smoke cigars." Pretty funny (and true). The men wear sarongs. And this is a popular way for them to travel.

- Downtown Rangoon. There's a lot to look at.

- This is a menu at a little cafe we stopped at. FYI, we had to drink bottled water our entire time in Asia. No un-cooked fruit or veggies either! Crazy.

- Here are some women carrying crazy amounts of stuff of their heads. Like I said, this place is old school.

- We went to a market. You could find just about anything there.

- A lot of artists sell their work at the market. I ended up getting a couple of unique pieces in Myanmar. Absolutely beautiful.

- Mmmmmmmm. Street meat.

- Here's Susan (our tour manager) showing some locals the photo that she just took of them. Big smiles!

- We also went to a hip-hop dance school. These kids performed at our first show. Amazing. They could compete with any troupe on MTV. The funny thing is that their gov't has NEVER ALLOWED MTV.

- And here's a fun pic of all of us together.

- Then it was time to relax and hit the pool back at the hotel. The state department really hooked us up with great hotels on the tour.

- Another shot of how lush it is here. Remember, this is in the middle of the biggest city in this nation.

- Coming up on the Shwe Dagon Pagoda. One of the most phenomenal sites in the world.

- This photo shows just how HUGE the whole complex is. You can see the people on the bottom left.

- Coming up to the Pagoda, this is a side shot of just the entry.

- And a close up of the entry.

- It's "guarded" by these statues. They're each about 20 ft. high.

- A shot from inside the entry.

- We finally made it to the main section at dusk.

- The main Pagoda is covered completely in real gold leaf. And at the very top there is an enormous diamond.

- This is one of the hundreds of little temples surrounding the main Pagoda. It's strange for Westerners to see LED lights used in religion.

- Another one of the little temples. You can see the monk on the bottom right.

- You can tell how big this Buddha statue is by looking at the people at the bottom.

- The attention to detail in the temples is absolutely mind-blowing. The artwork and craftsmanship are like nothing I'd ever seen.

- Everyone is barefoot here. And most people have a specific family temple or shrine that they visit.

- This is a typical "little" shrine. Again, the details are just so beautiful.

- Coming back, our friend Pont Pont bought us some sandalwood. These people chop it with the cleaver and use that old balance to weigh it.

- Here are some men building the stage on the side of the road. The big Water Festival is coming up. It's their New Year - a huge party.

- Colorful bottles of juices and drinks.

- Here we are doing an interview with some members of the press. They were really cool and very knowledgeable about music.

- Typical Burmese food for lunch. Delicious.

- I love this photo because it looks like the baby just DEVOURED that fish!

- Here we are at soundcheck. Another outdoor show. This was at the US Ambassador's estate.

- Susan took this photo of birds flying over us at soundcheck.

- Afterwards we stopped at the Rangoon General Hospital. My wife's grandma was born here and worked here as a nurse until Japan invaded in the 1940's.

- A few representatives of other countries got on stage with us during our show. They were drunk and CRAZY. It was actually pretty fun.

- Our sound crew in Myanmar. These guys were awesome.

- Here's me and our public affairs officer Pont Pont. She was such a great person to all of us.

- On our last day, our friend Elvia took us for a band massage at a spa. Here's Ivan afterwards with some giggly girls.

- And here are girls laughing again as Maya shows them their photo.

- One last shot of a Monk before we leave the country. We truly had some great times in Myanmar and hope to go back soon.
